Blob vs Descript

Descript made editing a transcript feel like editing a document, and it has since added an AI assistant on top. Blob starts where that leaves off: the whole edit, and whole new videos, directed in plain language.

The short version

Blob is an editor you direct. Describe the edit ("cut the dead air", "caption it for TikTok", "add b-roll while I talk about pricing") and it makes it: pacing, music, captions, reframing and generated shots, all from one conversation. It can also make a complete video from a description, so a project does not need footage to start.

Descript is a transcript editor. You edit the video by editing its text, which works very well for dialogue, and its AI co-editor, Underlord, now takes plain-language requests inside that transcript-based project.

The difference is what the AI is for. In Descript, it assists a transcript editor. In Blob, it is the editor. If your videos are more than a recording of people talking, or you need footage you never shot, Blob covers the whole job in one place.

Why creators choose Blob over Descript

  • The whole edit, not just the words. A transcript is perfect for cutting dialogue. Pacing, music that ducks under your voice, a vertical reframe that keeps the product in shot, a cutaway: in Blob you describe those exactly like everything else.
  • Whole videos, not five-second clips. Descript's generator makes short clips of about five seconds each, within a monthly allowance per editor. Blob plans the shots, generates the footage, records a voiceover, scores it and captions it, so an idea becomes a finished video.
  • Point at the frame. Pause, circle something, and say what should happen to it. No description of "the thing in the top left" required.
  • No seats, no plans. Blob is pay-as-you-go in dollars with a free starting balance, so quiet months cost nothing and there is no per-person subscription to manage.
  • Clean exports from the start. Descript's free plan watermarks exports. Every Blob export is clean, including ones made with your free starting balance.

Where the instructions land

Text-based editing is a genuinely good idea for dialogue: delete a sentence and the footage goes with it. Underlord builds on that model. It works inside the same transcript-and-timeline project, so what it does is shaped around the document.

Blob has no document to work around. The instruction layer covers the whole edit, so "make the pacing snappier", "score this and duck the music under my voice" or "reframe for vertical but keep the product in shot" are as natural as "cut that sentence". When a result is not quite right, you say so and Blob redoes it, the same way you would give notes to a human editor.

That is the core of it. Descript gives you a better way to operate an editor. Blob lets you stop operating one.

Generating footage

Descript can generate video, within limits. Underlord creates short AI clips from a description, usually by generating an image first and animating it, and Descript's own help centre describes them as five-second clips with a monthly allowance per editor. That can fill a cutaway.

Blob treats generation as a full way to make a video. Describe something that does not exist and Blob plans the shots, generates the clips, writes and records the voiceover, adds music and captions, then you keep refining by talking. It mixes just as easily: upload a talking-head recording and generate the three cutaways you never filmed, in the same project.

If you ever need a scene, or a whole video, that you did not shoot, this is the biggest practical difference between the two.

Pointing at the frame

Blob is built around one more interaction: pause on a frame, draw on it, and say what should happen to what you circled.

This closes the gap that any language-driven editor eventually hits, identifying a specific thing in the picture. Blurring a whiteboard, removing a stray object, or keeping the right subject in frame during a vertical crop are all much easier to point at than to describe. More on how that works.

How you pay

Descript sells subscription plans: a free plan, and paid plans billed per person, each with a monthly allowance of media hours and AI credits. A quiet month still costs a full month, and a heavy month can run into the allowance.

Blob is pay-as-you-go in plain dollars. New accounts start with a free balance, then you add funds and spend only on the work you actually run. There are no seats, no plan to outgrow and no allowance to under-use, and the cost of any one video is easy to see.

When Descript is enough

If your work is almost entirely podcasts or long interviews, where the transcript really is the video, Descript's multitrack audio and transcript tools are mature and hard to argue with. Teams already deep in its review and collaboration workflows may also stay put.

For everything around that, anything visual, generated, or reshaped for social, Blob does more of the work for you.

The verdict

Descript is a very good transcript editor with an AI assistant attached. Blob is an editor you direct from the first sentence, and it can make the footage as well as cut it.

For creators who want a finished video rather than a better editing workflow, Blob is the shorter path from idea to published cut.

Questions

Is Blob a Descript replacement?
For most video work, yes: editing, captions, music, reframing and generated footage all happen in one conversation. The one area where Descript stays stronger is dedicated podcast audio production with multitrack editing.
Doesn't Descript have an AI editor now?
Yes, Underlord. It assists inside Descript's transcript-based editor, and its video generation makes five-second clips. In Blob, the conversation is the whole editor, and it generates complete videos with voiceover, music and captions.
Does Blob do text-based editing too?
In the way that matters: you can reference what was said ("cut the part where I fumble the intro") and the edit anchors to that speech. You just never have to manage a transcript document to do it.
Can I try Blob without cancelling Descript?
Yes. New Blob accounts start with a free balance and it is pay-as-you-go after that, so there is no subscription overlap while you compare them.
Which is cheaper?
For most creators, Blob: there are no per-person fees and quiet months cost nothing. Very heavy, perfectly steady monthly use is the case where a subscription can come out ahead.
